PointsBet has proven to be a huge success in the Ontario iGaming market and it looks likely that the brand will secure a license for an Alberta spring launch for 2026. It's also predicted that MIXI could take control.

Revenues For PointsBet Online Casino in Ontario Continue to Rise

PointsBet may be known for sports betting in Australia where there is an ongoing battle to purchase the company, but in Canada it's online casinos that dominate and with an AGCO license, PointsBet Ontario is proving to be a huge success for its iCasino offering.

From July 1st 2024 to June 30th 2025, the revenue for PointsBet Ontario rose 26% over the previous year amounting to C$38.5 million. In line with the Ontario iGaming market, these profits came from casino gaming. The PointsBet Ontario online casino has risen 27% year over year reaching a total of C$1.02 billion.

The revenues for the same period for PointsBet Ontario's sports betting was only C$318.8 million.

CEO for PointsBet, Sam Swanell, said that PointsBet had nearly quadrupled the number of software providers it works with for the Ontario online casino. In the past year the number of providers has gone from 4 to 15 and the site now offers more than 1,000 games. The number of active players in Ontario has also increased by 30% and with users playing both online casino games and partaking in sports betting.

PointsBet is among the 77+ AGCO licensed online casinos in Ontario. It is listed on the iGaming Ontario website which is an excellent site to check if you are looking for licensed operators within the province.

PointsBet Alberta Coming in Spring 2026

It's expected that PointsBet will be getting an Alberta license to offer both online casino games and sports betting in the province when their regulated market commences. The timeline for this is still uncertain with many predicting the launch between April and June.

The Alberta iGaming market is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2026 according to what was reported at the Canadian Gaming Summit in June. Swanell expects the PointsBet Alberta launch to take place sometime between April and June.

Scott Vanderwel, the Canada CEO for PointsBet said that they fully intend to offer a full online casino product from the day the Alberta market opens along with their online sportsbook. He said that Alberta is seen as a critical region that can help shape the future of PointsBet.

Right now, PlayAlberta is the only regulated online casino in Alberta but once the AGLC opens the market in the same way that Ontario did in 2022, we could see this number expand with many of the big brands already licensed in Ontario, ready to roll out their Alberta offering.

MIXI Could Control PointsBet

There has been an ongoing battle to buy PointsBet in Australia and at the end of August 2025, PointsBet confirmed that the Japanese entertainment company MIXI has 51% of the voting power.

MIXI has been trying to buy PointsBet as has Betr an Australian sportsbook. Betr owns about 19% of PointsBet and has stated that they won't accept the offer to purchase their shares of PointsBet.

With the way things are going, there is a strong likelihood that MIXI Australia will end up with control once everything is finalized. All PointsBet directors have accepted MIXI's takeover offer and stated that they prefer this cash based proposal over Betr's share-based bit.

Betr's takeover option includes a provision to sell PointsBet Canada to Hard Rock Digital for around C$40 million. There is no information available on whether or not MIXI has any plant to change PointsBet Canada if it succeeds in gaining control.
