More Than One Gold Rush
Everyone has heard of the race to find gold in California and possibly the one in Klondike too. But did you know the rush for gold started 50 years before the Californian gold rush and 3,000 miles away from it? In 1799 a 12-year-old boy was fishing at Little Meadow Creek on his family's property in North Carolina when he found a 17lb yellow rock in the water. It sat in the family home for some years until his father decided to take it to a jeweller and sold it for $3.50 when it was worth 1000 that amount. The father soon realised his mistake and set up a little mining operation and the gold kept coming until he discovered a 28lb nugget. News soon spread and mines began to pop up all over the state with the government opening a branch of the federal mint in Charlotte in 1837.
North Carolina was the biggest producer of gold in the US until the California gold rush began in 1848. John Sutter moved to California in 1839 hoping to build an agricultural empire. When he needed lumber one of his men James Marshall set up a sawmill on the south fork of the American River. He soon discovered nuggets of gold. Sutter and Marshall tried to keep their find secret but word got out and it led to the biggest migration of people in the US. Conditions on the trail to the west were hard but it is estimated that 140,000 people arrived in California between 1849 and 1854.
In August 1896, Skookum Jim and his family found gold near the Klondike River in Canada's Yukon territory. Nearby miners soon flocked to the Klondike to stake their claims. A year later the news had spread around the world. Those who could afford it sailed around Alaska and up the Yukon River. Some tried walking the whole way from the US but the overland routes were confusing and tangled and many lives were lost. Some sailed up the coast and hiked inland but the routes were difficult. Towns sprouted almost overnight to accommodate the arrivals.
