GeoComply Registered Over 3.2 Million Geolocation Checks
During the first week of the regulated iGaming market in Alberta, GeoComply registered over 3.2 million geolocation checks as users within the province logged in or attempted to place bets through registered operators.
22 online casinos and sports betting sites went live in Alberta on the 13 July and 14 of these sites used GeoComply technology. In a statement from GeoComply there's a full breakdown of the data and while this only represents 64% of Alberta online casinos launched on day one of the regulated market, it is clear that the launch was successful and bigger than this data shows.
World Cup Instrumental in Early Betting in Alberta
The FIFA World Cup final week drove much of the betting action seen in the first week of the Alberta online gambling market. According to Anna Sainsbury, the co-founder and chair of GeoComply, over 53,000 checks mapped back to the Spain vs. Argentina final on Sunday 19 July.

Results for the first week of the Alberta iGaming market were in line with expectations with Ontario remaining the most relevant market for comparison. There are however key differences between the Alberta and Ontario markets.
Regulated gambling launched in Ontario just as the 2022 NHL playoffs began, providing a huge customer engagement boost.
Alberta's regulated iGaming market launched mid-summer when the sports calendar is relatively quiet. The exception was the World Cup.
Alberta's popular is around five million whereas Ontario's is 16 million making the Alberta market a third smaller.
Taking those factors into account, Alberta had a strong start and engagement is expected to build as the sporting calendar picks up in the fall.
More Online Casinos Open in Alberta
The AiGC list of registered iGaming sites in Alberta started with 22 on the 13 July 2026 and today more have been added including Sports Interaction, Monopoly Casino, and Party Casino. Pure Casino is also included on the list but the online casino has not gone live just yet. It is open for pre-registration though.
This shows that market expansion is already happening and will continue to do so in the fall.
PlayAlberta the provincially run online gambling site is still available for players, but now Albertan's have even more choice when it comes to legal casinos and sportsbooks.
GeoComply Verification Keeps Play Safe in Alberta
In the data released by GeoComply, it was reported that no downtime was experience during the launch window and 99.48% of the millions of logins and bets processed passed through geolocation screening.
The majority of the remaining 0.52% was due to location masking. GeoComply said, "This was people trying to disguise their location or use tools to fake being in Alberta."
"0.52% may seem small, but it accounts for thousands of transactions. In other words, our fraud and spoofing defenses are working, identifying and blocking potential bad actors before they can access the market."
