Alberta iGaming Market is Live with 22 Sites and More To Come
The Alberta iGaming market launched on 13 July 2026. 22 sites went live immediately as the province aims to move players away from unregulated online gambling platforms. FanDuel, Caesars, and BetRivers were among the first major brands to go live in the province as Alberta became Canada's second regulated commercial iGaming market.
Alberta iGaming Market is Live
Alberta's new regulated iGaming market launched at 12 a.m. Mountain Standard Time on the 13th July 2026. 22 operators went live in the province meaning that Play Alberta is no longer the only licensed iGaming site for Albertans.
FanDuel was one of the first operators to go live and reported that the first sportsbook bet placed was on France to qualify for the World Cup final.
The province expects around $76 million in the first year of revenues and requires all operators to meet licensing, responsible gambling, and revenue sharing obligations set out by the AGLC and AiGC.
A news conference to launch the regulated iGaming market was held by Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction of Alberta, and Dan Keene, Chief Executive Officer at Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).
Nally said that approximately 70% of Alberta online gambling had been taking place through unregulated sites that had limited or no player protection standards. He also said, "Standing still was not the responsible choice. Albertans were already gambling. What we're putting in place today is a regulated market that will put player safety and player responsibility first."
Nally continued, "It's also going to ensure that not only do all Albertans who are struggling with problematic gambling behaviours have access to treatment, but the operator will pay for it. That's the right thing to do.
Player Safety Is a Driving Force in Alberta's iGaming Market
Under the new regulations for iGaming in Alberta, operators have to first register with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) and then sign commercial agreements with the AiGC. Both of these must be completed before any operator can go live with an Alberta online casino or sportsbook.
To date, 50 operators have registered with AGLC and paid their fees. A one time $50,000 application fee and a $150,000 annual registration fee (per brand). It is estimated that in the first year of the Alberta iGaming market, $76 million will be earned in revenues. Of this, 2% of Gross Gaming Revenue will go to First Nations with 1% going to social responsibility initiatives.
